You can and should get your first credit card at the age of eighteen. At eighteen, you are old enough to enter into a legal contract with a bank for a credit card. You will need to have a checking and/or a savings account and at least a part time job before being able to apply for a credit card. The easiest card to get is a department store or box store credit card. Your initial credit line will be low and may go up as you make charges on it and pay them off.
A credit card is a good thing to have at the age of eighteen. Even if you don’t need one, you should apply for one and make small purchases on it that you can pay off in a single month’s time. You will avoid interest fees and will start to build a good credit score that way.

Make a small purchase with the store card (something you need). Paying the card balance back in full over one or two months will start a good payment history on your credit report.
