Can a student get a credit card?

What kind of credit card can a college student get if they've never had one before? Do you have to have a job to get a credit card? Do you have better credit if you don't have any debt?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Hi @chaddog!

Yes, credit card companies are making it easier for students to get credit cards regardless if the student have a job or not. Most cards are marketed as "student cards". The goal of these companies to acquire customers for a long time until they are no longer students. For those students who don't have a job or won't be able to provide income verification can get low-interest credit cards, prepaid cards and re-loadable prepaid cards that lets you add money to your account.

These are the type of credit card for college students:
* Cards with low initial balance - many companies provide low initial balance credit card that ranges from $200 to $500 without income verifications. Example of this is the Discover Student Card which offers higher balance based on credit report.
*Secured Credit Building Cards - big companies like Orchard Bank issue secured cards to student without the need to prove income or check credit.
*Prepaid Credit Cards
*Reloadable Prepaid Credit Cards

Credits cards are known as the initial step to establish a credit history. Students who have cultivated discipline and knowledge are reliable to have their credit cards. College students might have more expenses than they’ve ever had so possession of credit cards might make them enjoy lower rates on purchases. This could also help college students build their credit reports and continue their education.

Citi Dividend Platinum programs arranged for college students could be beneficial if they've never had one before. It is not a requirement to get a job first before you could get a credit card, but after you study, your ability to hold a steady job can improve the likelihood of getting approved for a good credit history. On the other hand, having no debt means using credit responsibly.

Yes, but you have to have a guarantor or some proof of income, specially if you have no credit history. The types of credit card you can get are already answered below, but my site will provide tips on how you can build your history, and eventually get a better credit card program.
