DEBT VALIDATION, PLEASE HELP !!!

Hi, i sent a validation letter to a collection agency(southwestcredit). it was for a AT&T bills.

Dear Collector:
This letter is being sent to you in response to a notice sent to me on 10/13/2010.
Be advised that this is not a refusal to pay, but a notice sent pursuant to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, 15 USC 1692(g) that your claim is disputed and validation is requested.
This is NOT a request for "verification" or proof of my mailing address, but a request for VALIDATION made pursuant to the above named title and section. I respectfully request that your offices provide me with competent evidence that I have any legal obligation to pay you.
Please provide me with the following:

* What the money you say I owe is for;
* Explain and show me how you calculated what you say I owe;
*Provide me with copies of any papers that show I agreed to pay what you say I owe;
* Identify the original creditor;
* Proof that you, the collection company owns the debt/or has been assigned the debt. (You are legally entitled to collect this particular Debt from me.)
*Show me that you are licensed to collect in my state
* Provide me with your license numbers and Registered Agent.

The only thing I received from them in the envelope when they responded to me was 3 copies of my last AT&T bill. NOTHING ELSE!!

Is it enough for a validation of the debt?
what should be my next step?
Thanks a lot!

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Are they old bills? We once got one of those for a phone number in New York City we haven't had for years--and for a phone company (maybe NYNEX) that doesn't even exist anymore. I was suspicious.

I want to say the company was in Illinois, but I don't recall their name. I called the police department there, and I was told that they get calls about them all the time.

The collection company purchases information on old debts whose statutes of limitations have run out and attempts to collect on them--that's their moneymaker. People get a collection notice and freak out--and they hope the person will pay it. You're doing something smart: creating a paper trail.

Don't call them. I think they have 30 days to respond to your letter.

And THAT's where they lose out. If you question it, and if they know they have an noncollectable debt, any further contact with you could be a violation of federal collection laws.

You did exactly what I did and I never heard from them again.

Your next step will be either to laugh or to pay.
