How can my husband's credit good or bad affect me?

We are separated and have been for a number of years, so we do not share bank accounts or any loans. However, he is lax on paying his bills; there is nothing I can do about it. I wonder how it is affecting my credit since technically we are married in the eyes of the law.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

You don't have to worry about your personal credit going bad because of your spouse's bad credit. It will only affect your credit if you applied for a joint credit and since this is far from happening since you are separated then you don't have to worry about how bad his credit is.

You and your husband will continue to have your own credit file. If you happen to apply for loans or credit as an individual the only thing they will look is your credit record. But if you apply jointly for a loan as co-borrowers, that will be the time they will look at both your reports.

The only way your credit will be affected by your spouse's poor credit is when you added yourself as an authorized used on any of your spouse's accounts with not-so-perfect-payment histories. If you have added to any of your partner's account that have delinquent payment histories, these could appear on your credit report and affect your credit score.

As long as your almost ex is not using your address to obtain any further loans or credit cards I don't believe you should have anything cause for concern. Even if he has applied for new credit at his own address, the companies do not normally ask for location details of an estranged spouse.

However, if you just want to make sure, for your own peace of mind, one of the things you could do is to ask this question of your own bank manager. There should be no charge for this advice.

Another way would be to try a free advisory service. In the U.K. there is the Citizens Advice Bureau. They have available experts in all professions to give free advice. I'm sure there must be something similar in the U.S.

They might also be able to suggest ways of officially disassociating yourself from him if you are unable to divorce him at present.

If you are not together I would not take chances based on the answers from some on line strangers. I would suggest getting a legal divorce. Even though I was legally divorced at the time the IRS came looking for $2000 from me because of my first husband. I paid a professional accountant $200 to straighten it out for me.

Eventually you CAN prove to the IRS you are separate and not responsible for his bills, but it can cost you. Just get divorced, it's cleaner
