What are some tips to help avoid having credit card problems?

My son is getting ready to get his first credit card. I want to share with him as many tips as possible to help guide him into being responsible with his credit card. I have made many mistakes in the past with credit cards and ran into big problems. I learned from my credit card mistakes and now pretty much just use cash.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Here are a few things that I have found that were helpful after making a few mistakes with credit cards in the past.

1) The first card should probably either be a card that has a low credit limit so that he won’t have to worry about running up an excessive amount of debt.

2) Only make purchases for amounts that you know you will be able to pay off at the end of every month. Keeping a low or no balance is good for your credit score and when you pay the balance in full each month, you don’t have to worry about incurring finances charges.

3) You will hear this a million times but making payments on time is very important. Our payment history is what lenders view and payments late continuously gives potential lenders the impression that you are a high risk with regards to being extended a line of credit.

4) It would also be a good idea to obtain a credit report every so often so as to keep an eye on any new items that show up.

There are plenty of ways to avoid having credit card problems but these are the ones that came to mind.

It must be a good feeling to own a credit card if you have no problems with it. In order to avoid trouble with your credit card, follow these helpful tips:
• Pay your balances in full and on time. Overdue payments will have huge interests or penalty.
• Pay first the balances with the highest APR.
• Try to avoid card offers that include penalty rates.
• Avoid making cash advances if possible.
• Do not lend your card to anyone. You, the owner, are the one responsible for your credit card use.
• Watch your account closely. Be mindful of the APR every time you get your monthly statement.
• If you already are in trouble with your credit card debt, you consult a debt relief professional while freezing your account or cut the cards up with a pair of scissors.

The best tip is don't use it. Getting in the habit of charging things is the first step to the life long cycle of playing catchup to make the payments.

No matter what you do with these things, when you decide to put them to rest, you have to have declining balances every month. That is, each month you need to owe less than the previous month on all of your cards total!

Get him a really low limit so if he does max it, he can't damage himself too much. Teach him how much he actually pays, i.e. cost plus interest if he only pays the minimum. Encourage him to pay it off in full each month.
